Operation Rain Barrel
George Mason University’s Office of Community and Local Government Relations is proud to sponsor Operation Rain Barrel: a fun, creative project with Arlington Public Schools to engage students and teach about environmental sustainability. Operation Rain Barrel is a project students begin each January and culminates at Go Gaga for Green–a community-wide event celebrating environmental sustainability–in April at the Arlington Campus.
The Office of Community and Local Government Relations at the Arlington campus partners with the administration of Arlington Public Schools to purchase plain rain barrels for each of Arlington County’s 37 schools to be painted artistically. Additionally, Mason provides the schools with educational information about rain barrels for teachers to incorporate into lessons as part of this project pertaining to water management and environmental sustainability.
The artistic rain barrels will be showcased at the Go Gaga for Green event on Saturday, April 30, 2016, 5-8 PM. The barrels will be judged and the top three winning designs selected. The winning schools receive monetary donations for their school’s PTA courtesy of our ongoing corporate sponsor, Water Management, Inc.
Additionally, the artistic rain barrels are auctioned off at the event through a silent auction. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Arlington County Council of PTAs’ scholarship fund and George Mason University’s Early Identification Program–a college prep program for middle and high school students who would be the first in their family to attend college. This year, proceeds will also benefit our community partner, Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment (ACE). ACE’s Energy Masters Program will receive 1/3 of the proceeds raised from the Go Gaga for Green Event. Energy Masters is a volunteer-based program to help residents improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
